Onyx is a large hand-finished micro-plaster canvas from Sydney Mirrors, available in three sizes up to 210x120cm, and it hangs portrait or landscape.

Pure contrast. Deep black against thick white plaster, with nothing in between to soften it. This is the piece for a room that can carry something bold, and it is the strongest statement in the range.

The relief is built up by hand in micro-plaster, so the surface is genuinely raised. Run your hand across it and you feel every edge. On a high-contrast piece the texture does double duty, because the raised white catches light while the black recesses hold shadow, and the whole thing sharpens as the day goes on.

Onyx is pure contrast with no colour and no reference to anything, which makes it the more graphic of the two. If you want contrast with some warmth in it, Strata runs black through cream instead.

Can Onyx hang portrait or landscape?

Both. The D loops are fitted so it can go either way up, so you can hang it tall on a narrow wall or wide above a sofa. Every piece in our wall art range works in both orientations.

Is the texture on Onyx real, or printed?

Real. The relief is micro-plaster applied by hand, so it sits proud of the canvas and you can feel it. Onyx, Tide, Quarry, Ridge and Alabaster are the pieces in our range with genuine raised texture. Dune, Drift, Strata and Basalt are printed canvases that look sculptural but are smooth.

What is micro-plaster?

It is a fine plaster finish applied in thin layers by hand. It builds real depth on the surface without the weight of a cast or carved piece, which is why the artwork can be this large and still hang on a normal wall.

Onyx or Ridge, which black and white piece should I choose?

Ridge builds to a single peak and reads as a landform, so it has a subject. Onyx is pure contrast with no subject at all, which makes it the more graphic of the two and the bolder piece in a plain room.

Will every piece look exactly the same?

Close, but not identical. Because the plaster is applied by hand, small variations in the strokes are normal and expected. That is the nature of a hand-finished piece rather than a fault.

Can I buy Onyx online, and do you deliver to Melbourne or Brisbane?

Textured pieces are packed with corner protection and surface padding so the relief is not crushed in transit. What size should I choose?

Hanging landscape above a sofa, aim for roughly two thirds of the sofa width. A 210cm sofa suits the 140 x 105cm piece, a 250cm to 280cm sofa suits the 180 x 120cm. Hanging portrait, measure the wall instead and aim to fill about two thirds of its width. Leave 15cm to 25cm between the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
