Tide is a large hand-finished micro-plaster canvas from Sydney Mirrors, available in three sizes up to 210x120cm, with raised relief you can feel.

It reads like surf breaking across dark volcanic sand, seen from above. The water runs through steel blue and slate grey, the foam is built up in thick white plaster, and grey shadow pools in every fold where the relief catches the light.

The blue is the part photographs never quite show. It shifts from a cool grey-blue in the shallows to a deeper slate where the water gathers, and the dark sand behind it is flecked with white rather than flat black. There is far more tonal range in it than a photo suggests.

The relief is built up by hand in micro-plaster, so the surface is genuinely raised. Run your hand across it and you feel every edge. The shadows move as the light changes through the day, which is something a printed canvas cannot do because its shadows are fixed in the image.

This is the most dramatic piece in the range. It works both ways up. Hang Tide portrait for a tall narrow wall, an entryway or a stairwell, or turn it landscape above a sofa or a sideboard. The D loops are fitted so it goes either way.

It arrives framed and ready to hang, with nothing to assemble and no framing cost on top. Order online for delivery across Australia, or collect from our Botany showroom in Sydney.

How Tide compares. Tide, Quarry, Ridge, Alabaster and Onyx are the hand-finished pieces. Alabaster is pure white and quiet. Quarry is neutral and easy to place. Ridge and Onyx are black and white with no colour at all. Tide is the only one with blue and grey in it, and the only coastal design in the range.

Frequently asked questions

Can Tide hang portrait or landscape?

Both. The D loops are fitted so it goes either way up. It was designed portrait, which suits a tall narrow wall or an entry, but it turns landscape for above a sofa or sideboard.

What colours are in Tide?

Steel blue and slate grey through the water, thick white plaster in the foam, and a near-black sand ground flecked with white. It is not a black and white piece. The blue and grey carry most of it, and both read cooler in person than they do on screen.

Is the texture on Tide real, or printed?

Real. The relief is micro-plaster applied by hand, so it sits proud of the canvas and you can feel it. Tide, Quarry, Ridge, Alabaster and Onyx all have genuine raised texture. Dune, Drift, Strata and Basalt are printed canvases that look sculptural but are smooth.

What is micro-plaster?

It is a fine plaster finish applied in thin layers by hand. It builds real depth on the surface without the weight of a cast or carved piece, which is why the artwork can be this large and still hang on a normal wall.

Will blue and grey work in a warm neutral room?

Yes, because the blue here is muted rather than bright. Slate and steel tones sit against beige, timber and travertine without fighting them, and the white foam ties it back to a neutral scheme. If you want no colour at all, Ridge or Onyx are the better choice.

Will every piece look exactly the same?

Close, but not identical. Because the plaster is applied by hand, small variations in the strokes are normal and expected. That is the nature of a hand-finished piece rather than a fault.

Can I buy Tide online, and do you deliver to Melbourne or Brisbane?

Yes to both. Order online and we ship Australia-wide, with in-stock orders usually arriving within 3 to 10 business days. Textured pieces are packed with corner protection and surface padding so the relief is not crushed in transit. Sydney customers can collect from our showroom at 48 Chegwyn St, Botany NSW 2019, open Friday 2pm to 5pm and Saturday and Sunday 12pm to 4pm.

What size should I choose?

Hanging portrait, measure your wall width and aim for the artwork to fill roughly two thirds of it. Hanging landscape above a sofa, aim for about two thirds of the sofa width. Either way, leave 15cm to 25cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
